Regeneration beside the Regent's Canal
Wharf Road was a 327-home regeneration scheme in Islington, N1, delivered for A2Dominion by United House, a BREE legacy company. Completed in autumn 2015, the 57.6 million pound development transformed a canalside site beside the Regent's Canal into a substantial new residential quarter known in part as City Wharf.
Designed by FBM Architects with urbanism input from Stephen Marshall, the scheme reshaped a former industrial plot within a conservation-sensitive setting, adding homes across a mix of tenures including private and affordable rental.
The site sits close to Old Street and the City of London, making it a well-connected location for the new homes and part of the continuing intensification of housing along the canal corridor. The development helped meet demand for rental and shared-ownership homes in a part of inner London under sustained pressure for housing.
BIM-led delivery of a major London scheme
The project was notable for its use of Building Information Modelling to coordinate the design and construction of the circa 58 million pound scheme, helping manage the complexity of a dense canalside site. United House had been appointed to the contract worth around 60 million pounds, marking it as one of the company's larger London residential commissions of the period.
The completed scheme provided a substantial block of new rental and shared homes for A2Dominion, contributing to the regeneration of the wider Wharf Road area and giving the housing provider a significant addition to its portfolio in N1. As one of United House's larger London commissions of the period, Wharf Road reflects BREE's legacy capability on dense, high-value canalside sites.
The development knitted new homes into a canalside conservation setting, with the design responding to the character of the area while delivering at the density the site could support.
