A landmark riverside scheme for Salford
Outwood Wharf Phase 2 brought 296 build-to-rent homes to the Salford waterfront, a 50 million pound development that BREE Construction delivered for Ridgeback Group alongside operator ila. The scheme helps to meet strong demand for high-quality private rental accommodation across the North West and contributes to the wider regeneration of the Outwood Wharf area.
The development was designed with IBI Group and arranged across three connected blocks rising to 8, 10 and 23 storeys, with around 4,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The taller of the buildings gives the waterfront quarter a clear landmark on the Salford skyline, while the lower blocks step the scheme down towards the surrounding streets and the river edge.
Homes, elevations and finishes
The 296 apartments and townhouses combine well-considered private rental homes with shared amenity space designed for everyday living. The elevations use a red multi facing brick, precast panels and a brick cladding system supplied by LBT Brick and Facades, giving the buildings a warm, durable character that responds to the local context and to the industrial heritage of the riverside setting.
Internal joinery was delivered by WEJ across first-fix, second-fix and kitchen packages throughout the scheme, supporting consistent quality across all three blocks. The mix of apartment sizes and townhouse layouts was designed to suit a range of households, from single renters to families looking for more space close to the city.
From contract win to topping out
The 50 million pound contract win confirmed BREE's role in delivering one of Salford's most significant recent build-to-rent neighbourhoods. Work ran from 2022 to 2024, with the topping-out ceremony held on 14 September 2023. The event was attended by senior figures from BREE, Ridgeback and ila, marking structural completion of the three-block scheme.
For its rental launch the completed development is marketed as Oldfield Wharf, the brand under which the homes are let to residents. Now complete, the scheme adds rental housing to Salford and helps to bring new life and activity to a key stretch of the waterfront.
